Overview

I created a series of 6 silk quilts examining the pixel, the smallest unit of information to convey a digital image. The project culminated in a solo exhibition at Stanford's d.school and presentation at the Anderson Collection. It was also selected for "Spill Over: 8th Annual Undergraduate Juried Competition" at the Stanford Art Gallery. Thank you to Jessi Pipert for leading the Stanford Honors in the Arts program, David Song for creating the digital quilt, and Gabbi Grill for advising this project.

Artist Statement

Digital images play an integral part in our construction of reality. Homage to the Pixel is a series of quilts that examine the pixel, the smallest unit of information to convey a digital image. Each quilt begins with an image of an ordinary, utilitarian tech object or icon involved in the image viewing process, such as an outlet, the source of power. The images are digitally deconstructed and collaged. The image data, the set of instructions used by the computer to compose the image, is revealed and manipulated to produce unpredictable visual effects. By revealing the pixelation inherent in the images, the viewer confronts the nature of the construction of images. An image is revealed to be a compilation of squares of color, rather than reality itself. Homage to the Pixel brings together design and art to recontextualize artifacts of technology and understand our hybridized digital and physical realities through a new lens, one pixel at a time.
